Chimney Repair, Rebuild & Conservation

Chimneys are exposed to some of the harshest weather conditions and are often the first part of a building to fail. At G.C Stonemasons, we diagnose and resolve chimney issues ranging from water ingress and failing mortar to structural instability and collapsed flues. Our work includes careful dismantling and rebuilding, stone replacement, lime mortar repointing, haunching, capping, and ventilation; all carried out using appropriate materials to ensure chimneys remain safe, breathable, and built to last.

Chimney Restoration — Bonnybridge

A severely leaning chimney with advanced stone decay was at risk of structural failure. The chimney was carefully stripped back beyond the gable line to reach a solid stone foundation before rebuilding. Approximately 80% of the stone was replaced on a like-for-like basis using appropriate materials and traditional methods. The completed work restored stability, longevity, and the original character of the chimney.

Chimney Restoration — Braco

This project involved the rescue and restoration of a severely leaning chimney that was at risk of failure. The structure was stripped back and made safe before being rebuilt using new stone where required and repointed in traditional lime mortar. The chimney was rehaunched, capped, and ventilated to ensure long-term durability and weather protection. The completed works returned the chimney to a stable, safe condition and prepared it to withstand winter exposure.

Chimney Rebuild

This project involved the urgent stabilisation and rebuild of a chimney damaged during severe weather. The structure was made safe before being carefully dismantled and rebuilt, incorporating approximately 30% newly supplied, hand-cut stone to match the original masonry. The completed works restored the chimney’s structural integrity and appearance, ensuring long-term durability and safety.

Chimney Restoration — Den of Culross

This project involved the restoration of three chimneys at a historic wedding venue in Den of Culross for a returning client. Water ingress had begun to affect the structures, requiring targeted repairs to protect both performance and appearance. The chimneys were carefully restored, with haunching works renewed to the copes to provide a durable and weather-resistant finish. The completed works secured the chimneys against further water ingress while preserving the character of this well-known venue.

Chimney Restoration — Bannockburn

This project involved the summer restoration of a chimney in Bannockburn, carried out on behalf of the local council. The works addressed water ingress issues and restored the chimney to a sound, weather-resistant condition. The successful outcome has led to further works being scheduled, including the full gable and the opposite chimney, planned for the following year.

Chimney Restoration — Torbrex

This project involved the restoration of a chimney in the Torbrex area following reports of water ingress affecting the living room below. A survey identified cracked and failing cement mortar, including missing joints that were allowing water to penetrate the structure. The defective cement was carefully cut out and replaced with traditional lime mortar to restore breathability and weather resistance. The completed works resolved the water ingress and helped prevent future damp-related issues.

Chimney Rebuild & Repointing — Crook of Devon

This project involved stripping and rebuilding a chimney after collapsed flues were identified during preparations to install a log burner. The chimney was rebuilt to ensure it was structurally sound and suitable for the new installation. A second chimney was cut out and repointed using traditional lime mortars to prevent water ingress and improve long-term weather resistance. The completed works ensured both chimneys were safe, functional, and protected against the elements.

Chimney Rebuild — Beechwood, Stirling

This project involved the repair of a severely leaning chimney that posed a significant safety risk. The stonework had deteriorated extensively, with sections no longer structurally sound. The chimney was carefully dismantled and rebuilt to restore stability and ensure long-term safety. The completed works returned the chimney to a secure, durable condition.
